Sunshine Coast to Fraser Island Boasting an average seven hours of sunshine a day, the subtropical Sunshine-Fraser Island region is a major resort area with a top-of-the-line tourist facilities, as well as a place to experience the natural beauty and environmental wonder of the Queensland coast. In a state where stunning scenery is the norm, the Sunshine Coast still overwhelms with the beauty of its natural setting. There are golden surf beaches, sandy coves nestled between bush-clad headlands and wide, lazy subtropical rivers. The towns are big but not brash; some of the buildings are high –rise, but modestly so. Sophisticated Noosa Heads, with its five star-star hotels and trend-setting restaurant, is the regions’ resort centerpiece. To the north is Hervey Bay, famous as a centre for Australian whale-watching. Lying between Noosa and Hervey Bay is the 50 km Cooloola Coast, an undeveloped coastal wilderness and a target destination for outdoor adventurers. Offshore, and sharing many of the same landscape characteristics, lies the 122 km long Fraser Island, where massive 500 000 year old dunes cradles freshwater lakes, rainforests grow out of the sand, beaches are measured in tens of miles, and where the camping, walking, fishing, surfing sand nature-based activities are some of the best in the state. The sunshine coast, like its more southerly counterpart the Gold Coast, is a major resort offering holiday-makers world –class facilities. But development is less intense on the sunshine Coast, the natural landscapes are better preserved and the overall tone is more relaxed. Despite the preponderance of international-style resorts and up market restaurant, particularly around Noosa, the Sunshine Coast is still a place where you can go to the shops barefoot without attracting attention.
